FTMF Youth – notes from this weeks’ session

· Kitzy circulated ‘Recession Insights’ hand out (SCAM, Mintel Pocket Money, Guardian sourced). Call Kitzy if you need it or find it: T:\youth planners – sharing\Recession Stuff March 09

· 2 topics emerged from the session that we’d like to investigate and potentially write more detailed papers on:

1. Access vs. Ownership (the move towards non-ownership of music & content)

§ Spotify discussions around their free models. We liked the fact that you could pay for a 24hr stint and host a house party

§ The rise and rise of FREE

§ Nokia still trying to launch their online music store & charge

§ That good Wired article on FREE: http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/magazine/16-03/ff_free

2. When brands let real people build their properties

§ Tennents asked punters to help them decide what their festival output should look like (how many, where they should be held, ticket prices etc…)

§ Nine Inch Nails released hours of HD video footage and allowed fans to splice together, the best effort was then released for real

§ Nine Inch Nail also give you the chance to remix their tracks: http://remix.nin.com

§ Beastie Boys gave fans handycams and asked them to film gigs from their perspective. Results were compiled and released as DVD ‘Awesome, I fuckin’ shot that!’

§ Band, Feeder may have also done this as well

· Music Observations (from Tim BrandAmp & Michael TED)

o Live music now surpassed recorded music for revenue

o Indie Bands seem to be withering (on a sales front). All about the Lady Gaga / Female, Quirky, Electro, youth thing for now.

o Acts trying to cut out labels increasingly and going to the fans themselves.

o Hardly any new ‘Brands’ entering music (usual suspects: Orange, Bacardi, and Carling). Although Barclaycard just taken over from O2 on Wireless.

· Gaming Observations (from Ian V, TED)

o All about the online downloading of content for games

o In order to keep players into their games (and to stop them selling on the second hand market as quickly) companies now offer downloadable levels, teams, extensions etc… for c.$10 (full games: $50). This download market is large and growing

o New Services emerging in the future (as broadband speeds get really quick) surrounding ‘Cloud Computing’. Games held remotely not on your box in the front room.

o Music Games still massive and growing. Guitar Hero 3 has now made $1bn, that’s $1 Billion Dollars! Guitar Hero Aerosmith to be launched and Rock Band Beatles. The continuation of gaming parties looks buoyant.

· Film Observations (from Ian V, TED)

o All about 3D

o Little real invention in this sector since Surround Sound

o Watch out for Bolt & Avatar (new James Cameron film)

o http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_(film)

· Hook into or Help Out On: (Live MediaCom Briefs)

o Fifa & Charm Girls Club (Ian, TED)

o Gillette – boys & girls 14+ (Nick, International)

o Skittles – creative colour (James, Planning)

o Wrigley – cool sampling needed (James & Lindsey, Planning)

o Nokia – Music (Sean & Hannah, Planning)

o Hugo Boss (Ian, International)

Cheers
