The ‘e’lection

Hello forward thinkers,

It’s been a while eh?

As the nation starts to countdown to the election and every social media ‘guru’ worth his or her salt starts regaling us with stories of Obama’s success, I thought I’d point you in the direction of someone who knows what he’s talking about.  Namely Andrew Rawnsley.

Wonderfully insightful bit of writing about social media and politics.  Have a peak below…

Ben’s Eye – 27/11

Hello all,

‘Tis been a week where we’ve finally seen the back of Jedward and the banks have been allowed to keep our money, plus an additional 60 billion or so.  But enough of that, here’s some media news…

Wiki starting to lose it’s appeal
The past few months has seen noticeable drops in the number of people editing Wikipedia.  The first sign of people being less interested in ‘creating’ on the internet or simply a bump in the road?

But then again...
People are still creating masses of conversations online.  X-Factor being a particularly brilliant example

Murdoch’s battle with Google rumbles on
Now he’s trying to leverage Microsoft’s desire to topple Google, by encouraging people to de-list their content on Google.  Brave or foolhardy stuff, depending on your point of view.

End of the Century (well decade)
which means lots and lots of lists!  This one of particular interest, dealing with styles and items that have defined the last 10 years.  No surprise to see the prominence of the iPhone.

And finally…

How IKEA used Facebook with great success in Sweden

And because it’s Friday.  The Matrix, but with Lego(!)

Have a great weekend.

Thanks,

Hello one and all,

‘Tis been awhile but am back with some choice news nuggets from a week of falling state-owned bank profits and resigning scientists.  As ever, enough of news from the outside world.  Here’s some media(ish) themed stuff…

Top web hits of the year

Or memes if you want to be all  pretentious about it.  The content of these huge hits tells its own story about the uses of the internet

Is Twitter a danger to free speech?

Bit of a change of tack from the usual Twitter love-in articles.  Interesting point.

Stephen King in 5,000 pieces

This is a little old but still interesting.  Mr King’s latest opus has been split into 5,000 pieces and scattered around the internet for his fans to find and piece back together.  Exciting stuff.

Internet privacy and all that

Seems that we lag behind the rest of Europe when it comes to internet privacy.  Looks like the next few years will increasingly be a battle over ‘cyberspace rights’; and it’s not just us who has an interest in this – the legal ramifications and potential for government regulation are enormous .  We’d be foolish to ignore the importance of it.

And finally…

This is pretty funny

Have a great weekend!

Hello one and all,

‘Tis been a week where we’ve learnt that the Hollywood glitterati will forgive anything so long as it’s one of their own and Gordon got all huffy.  Failing that grabbing your interest, here’s some media news…

The Sun doesn’t shine on Labour any more

News that the Sun is no longer backing Labour has hit Gordon Brown hard – after all it’s backed the winner of every general election since 1974.  However considering the massive shifts in the way we consumer our news and opinion, does it matter that  much?

The kids are alright

Interesting research into teen media behaviour, turns out they’re not all tweeting their faces off – in fact they spend less time on the internet than people older than them.

Online kills the TV star

Online ad spend has passed TV spend for the first time.  Cue massive arguments over TV being dead etc etc.  However, a large amount of this online spend is driven by the one and only Google.  So is it simply the tale of one very, very successful company?

Social Narcissism?

Thought provoking post on social media, is it the case that we’re all just a bunch of narcissists rather than being more connected?

And finally…

Some funnies…

Have a great weekend!
